KMSKA Open Again
The KMSKA has recently reopened after having been closed for almost 10 years. The opening was soon followed by a lot of fuss in the press about the white floor, which is immediately full of black stripes from the shoes of visitors. Compared to the past, the museum now actually consists of 2 buildings in 1. Via the old entrance you can still go via the central corridor to the first floor and view the old rooms with the monumental paintings by the old masters such as Rubens. This part of the museum has not really changed and still has…

Mac OS Upgrade Problems
Many years ago when my my Mac Pro 1.1 became obsolete I bought a new one, the black cilinder that was considered by many as a step back because of the limited upgrade possibilities, especially compared to the previous tower version. Looking at the latest version of the Mac Pro I guess Apple agreed even though they never said so publicly. I never had real issues with the limited upgrade options. In the end I only had to expand the RAM which was no problem and then at some point needed a bigger internal SSD. That was a bit more…

Swimming with Sharks, Joris Luyendijk (ISBN 9781783350650, Guardian Faber Publishing)
The Dutch version of this 2015 book (Het kan niet waar zijn) has been on my pile of books to read for a long time. I got to know Luyendijk through his column in De Standaard. And so I decided to buy his book. That ended up on the pile because I am a collector with more money than time for books. A while ago I bought ‘People like us’, also by Joris Luyendijk and when I had to choose a new book to read last weekend, this one was still at the top of the pile. Then it occurred…

The A-Team (2010)
When I grew up the tv series of the A-Team played and I was a fan. But time went by and I forgot about it. Then a while ago while browsing the movie catalogue I came across this movie about the A-Team from 2010 and I was naturally interested. From the cast I only knew Liam Neeson (who plays Hannibal Smith) and Jessica Biel. A sequel was planned but cancelled because this movie didn’t do so well at the box office. Maybe because there were not enough stars in the line up, fans from the tv series didn’t believe the…

Reducing my shaving footprint
My shaving habits have changed a couple of times. I started with some disposable Gilette type, then switched to the types where you could change the blades, went to an electric shaver from Philips or Braun, back to Gilette and then finally back to a modern Philips shaver. The reason why I changed often was because I have a sensitive skin, plus I am sometimes a bit clumsy. So dry electric shaving irritated my skin and was the reason why I switched from electric shaving back to Gilette. But with the razors I would sometimes cut myself if I didn’t…

Zero. The biography of a dangerous idea, Charles Seife (ISBN 978-0285635944, Souvenir Press Ltd)
A little book from 2000 about the history of the number zero and the linked concepts of void and infinity. It explains how Greek philosophy struggled with the void and the concept of zero and how then later on prevailing Aristotelian philosophy in the Middle Ages in Europe retarded in the introduction and use of zero in society. This aspect wasn’t known to me. The book gives a nice explanation of how the absence of zero and the infinitesimally small gave rise to the paradox of Zeno. It then goes on to more modern times where zero and the infinitesimally…
