Wabi Sabi Leuven
I went for dinner not so long ago in Wabi Sabi Leuven located in the Muntstraat. We normally go to the Bonheiden location but this time I went with some colleagues so Leuven was closer. The quality of the food is very similar between both locations but in Leuven the restaurant is located in an old house which has a lot more charm and character compared to the Bonheiden prefab bungalow. As a result, going for dinner in Leuven feels a lot more as an evening out than just plainly having dinner. If both locations would be equally far from…

First impressions of The StoryGraph
In another post I mentioned the negative image of Goodreads because it is owned by Amazon and considered as not the right platform for book lovers by some. The StoryGraph was proposed as an alternative for quality seekers. I decided to check it out as I am not a big fan of Amazon myself mainly because of how they treat their workforce. Unfortunately I have to say the user experience of The StoryGraph so far has not been excellent. Signing up and importing your Goodreads data is easy enough although it took a few hours for my books to show…

Wabi Sabi Bonheiden
I don’t remember how I discovered sushi but I think I first ate it in the nineties. Since then I have been a fan and with me the family, kids included (when they finally arrived). Nowadays sushi restaurants are quite common and every now and then we go for sushi. One restaurant we go to relatively often is Wabi Sabi in Bonheiden. The first time we went it was actually for the teppanyaki but they don’t have that anymore. I believe the place closed during covid and then re opened but without teppanyaki. The sushi is decent and priced OK.…

Is there no price limit for high end speed pedelecs ?
A while ago I got myself the Stromer ST3 Pinion. With a price of around 8700 euro before ‘discount’ I found this already painly expensive. I was long thinking to shave off 1200 euro by sticking to good old Shimano gears and a chain but the absolute maintenance free belt drive and Pinion gears are worth the extra money if you can afford it. Anyway, if I had been living in a good weather country like Spain I would probably not have gone for the Pinion because of the price. If money was no object and I would have traded…

Lego Batman Tumbler
For Christmas I gave the kids a Lego Batman Tumbler to build. You can get it from many places like for example on the lego site but I managed to grab a nice discount from Bol.com at the time. It was fun building at a leisurely pace with the 3 of us. The set consists of just over 2000 pieces so it took us a while piecing it together on weekday evenings when there were no other obligations. It is not as spectacular as the tumbler from the movies but still quite impressive. The 4 wheels at the back and…

Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace
The first movie of the prequel trilogy finally arrived in 1999, 16 years after the release of Return of the Jedi. Expectations were high but reviews were mixed. Certainly compared to the original trilogy the visual effects are stunning. And with Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman there are excellent actors in the leading roles. The only exception is Jake Lloyd who plays the young Anakin Skywalker. Certainly compared with the others his acting isn’t excellent. Luckily there is the silly Jar Jar Binks character that draws all negative attention towards him. I watched the movie again a while…

Looking for a book ?
Ever looked for a book or some details about one ? I had just the other day a book without an ISBN number on the cover which was messing up my digital library system. Luckily the internet came to the rescue. Everything you need is ISBN Search. You can search based on ISBN, title and/or author. You get back edition, author, publisher and even links to places where you can buy a copy.

50 books a year
I read an article in De Standaard yesterday from their journalist Jan-Frederik Abbeloos about how he finally managed to read 50 books in 2022. Like me he uses goodreads to keep track of his progress and almost apologises for it (but not really) as it is part of the Amazon evil empire. JF lists some other qualitative and literary gripes people seem to have with goodreads but for him the app is mainly a a means to keep track of his reading progress. I started using Goodreads for the same reason before it became part of Amazon and never left.…

Mathematical Scandals
Short little book by an American math teacher for people (teenagers) who think mathematics is dull. The idea is to do this by bringing the human side of mathematicians to the forefront. 21 mathematicians are covered in 136 pages. Each chapter starts with a fictitious dialogue to outline the ‘scandal’. If you are interested in the lives and work of mathematicians this book is not for you as it barely scratches the surface. Not surprising considering there are only about 6 pages available for each mathematician and almost haf of that is used for the fictitious dialogue. If you believe…

La Royale
Today we went looking for a student room in Leuven for our daughter and we had time to lunch between visiting 2 rooms. As the second place was not far from Leuven central station we decided to eat at La Royale. This is part of The Lodge group but it is definitely better than the original Lodge in Heverlee from this group. It was a gender separation lunch with the women going for a Greek salad and a salad with scampi and the men going for a burger. We arrived around 12:30 which was early so we could. pick a…
