After having watched the Daniel Craig James Bond movies I decided to “binge” watch another franchise. I saw the original Terminator movie in the theatres when it came out in 1984 as I was 15 year old and at the time it blew me away as a revolutionary movie. Watching it again after a couple of decades the special effects are definitely dated but luckily this is only visible in a couple of scenes. Most of the movie we just see Arnold Schwarzenegger whose acting is also “awkard” at times but that is not due to special effects. At the time the world kind of agreed that Arnold finally had found a role that suited his limited acting capabilities. Looking back this role catapulted him to movie stardom. A series of 6 terminator moviess spanning 35 years resulted. The first movie is the strongest from the story telling point of view, mainly because it was novel and completely new in many ways. It also caught the cold war, nuclear armageddon vibe of the time very well. Having watched this movie again I wondered if it would not be possible to upgrade the special effects using AI to bring it a bit more in line with the capabilities of today. Not a complete redo but simply modest improvements to the obviously fake scenes. I am sure it could be done but on the other hand, you can also simply watch Terminator 2.
