We recently walked part of the Dutch Mountain Trail in the South of The Netherlands. This is a 100k walk from Eygelshoven to Maastricht. Real hikers probably take a backpack and walk the trail in 4 or 5 days and then camp at various sites along the way. We opted for a luxury hike and stayed at Hotel TerWorm in Heerlen and transported ourselves from the hotel to the starting point of the section of the day and then at the end made our way back to our hotel. No need to carry a heavy backpack that way. The hotel is situated in an old renovated castle. We slept in a spacious room with a double bed, desk, a couple of comfortable chairs and a bathroom with both shower and bath. Our room was located in a building next to/in front of the main castle building. Although we saw many people at breakfast we didn’t hear a sound from any of the neighbouring rooms. On our first evening we opted to have diner in the hotel restaurant. We could only chose between a 4 or 5 course menu. We picked the 4 course menu which turned out enough. Portions per course were just right and the cook made a real effort to turn every course into something special. The setting in the old castle with dimmed lights turned it into a relaxed and romantic evening. Not cheap but priced correctly for the quality of food you get. Breakfast was a mix of buffet and orders. Drinks (coffee, tea, juice) were served by the waitress and you could order your eggs to your liking, which were also served. Bread, fruit, yoghurt and so on were available at the buffet to choose from. The eggs were excellent, the buffet more standard but still more than simply good. As we still have to come back to finish the complete Dutch Mountain Trail we plan to come back and stay at Hotel TerWorm next time as well. We will probably dine at the hotel for one night again as well as the food and atmosphere were really excellent.
