The Expendables

Recently watched this movie from 2010 again. It was a bit of an ironical movie project from Stallone, bringing together action movie heroes from the past: The Expendables. In the movie the expendables are a group of mercenaries that get hired by the CIA to take out another CIA operative gone rogue as a drug baron on a remote island somewhere in South America. All of this is not revealed and a ‘simple’ assassination job turns out into a small war against the army on the island. Not much more of a story is to be expected when watching this movie and most characters are so stereotypical they become funny in a way. This is a movie not to be taken seriously and the actors also don’t seem to have taken it very seriously. It was a hit at the time and a return of stars from the past to the big screen in an old style action movie. But with some humour and irony added and more budget and modern special effects. The result is an over the top action movie with lots of bullets, explosions and dead bad guys. The stars from the old age include: Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Eric Roberts, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren and MIckey Rourke. Added to these are some more recent action movie fixtures like Jet Li, Jason Statham and Randy Couture.
