• Schrödinger’s kittens and the search for reality, John Gribbin (ISBN 9781857994025, Weidenfeld & Nicolson)

After reading In Search of Schrödinger’s cat by John Gribbin I decided to also read this sequel not really knowing what to expect. His first book is a more or less traditional explanation of quantum mechanics and its bizarre description of reality. Ever since its conception physicists and philosophers have been struggling with the interpretation of quantum mechanics. This has been so difficult that the physicist community in general stopped trying to understand quantum mechanics at a fundamental level and limited itself to using quantum mechanics to calculate and predict. The first book came out in 1984 and Schrödinger’s kittens…

  • Unexpected Fun: Solving Sudoku Killer in Winter

Recently I had trouble to keep up the weekly running frequency due to the cold. Last 2 weeks temperatures dropped close to freezing point and on top of that it started snowing for almost a week. Luckily I still had some days off so I didn’t have to endure snow triggered traffic jams. Luckily our paper had a puzzle special page with something they called the Sudoku Killer. This is a normal Sudoku but a lot fewer numbers pre filled and instead grouped squares for which the total sum of the numbers to fill is given. As can be seen…

  • Piet Vroon: From Bestselling Author to Tragic Story

I read this book a little while ago in October mainly because it was short and I was behind on my reading target for 2025. It is barely 50 pages thick and I read a couple of other books by Piet Vroon long ago that I liked very much. Unfortunately, the quality of the book is in line with its title, which in English would be something like botch job. It was written as a companion to an exposition in very short time and is not very coherent. Piet Vroon was a Dutch psychologist that became famous and wrote a…

  • Ulm

Traveling home from Croatia we stopped again in Ulm after leaving Lesce. Lesce to Ulm was a little over 500 km and took us most of the day. Looking for a place for lunch we ended up in restaurant Senses in Siegsdorf in Germany, just across the border with Austria. This turned out to be a charmingly old fashioned type of bar where we had good food sitting outside in the sun. According to trip advisor it is also the #1 nightlife spot in Siegsdorf which probably means there are no trendy modern places around. But if you are looking…

  • Exploring Lake Bled: A Scenic Walking Route

On our only full day in Lesce we want to go for a walk around the famous lake of Bled. We could go on foot from our apartment but the 5,5km doesn’t look very scenic which is why we prefer to take the car and park about a km away from the lake. Unfortunately there is the predicted traffic jam in the direction of the lake which starts already a km away from our apartment. We ask Google for an alternative route which leads us onto an unpaved road into the woods. When we reach a bridge we have to…

  • Understanding Geometry: A Parent’s Journey Through Math

While I was in high school myself I never much cared to put a lot of time in learning geometry. Now, with our youngest in 3rd grade struggling with mathematics I decided I should at least read his geometry text book so I know what he is supposed to know. I finished the first 60 pages on angles and the sum of angles of. I have to admit that I forgot most or never really learned much of this simple stuff. Going through the theory and problems at least helped me understand some of the properties of triangles and squares.…

  • A Stop in Lesce: Dining and Delights Near Bled, Slovenia

On our way back home from Croatia we break the journey into pieces and make a first stop in Lesce near Bled in Slovenia. Krk to Bled is only a few hundred kilometers and traffic is light so we arrive in Bled in time for an early lunch and too early to go to the rooms we rented at Vila Eva. Near the apartment there is the restaurant Kleznk which looks promising. The restaurant is attached to the airstrip and we have a good view of small airplanes landing and taking off with gliders attached. The weather is bright, we…

  • Restaurant Forza in Baska

On our last day in Krk and Croatia we visit Baska at the other end of the island Krk. Although the distance is not great it takes quite a while because of many small roads and speed limits. Baska is another charming small village with some nice medieval sections. The seaside is really crowded with tourists. Looking from high up down at the sea it is clear why : blue sea straight from an tourist brochure, nice waves to have fun in and platforms in the sea to climb onto when you need a short break. We stop at a…
