• First Light, Richard Preston (ISBN 9780679449690, Random House)

I came across a reference to this book while reading The Hot Zone, also from Richard Preston. I wrote another post about The Hot Zone earlier on this blog. Although The Hot Zone is a bit on the sensational side it was definitely well written so I decided to read First Light as well especially as this book is about astronomy which I like reading about. It originally came out in 1987 and had a reprint in 1996 and apparently has a bit of a cult status. I found a second hand hard cover edition in mint condition on Amazon…

  • Jason Bourne

Movie number 5 and the final instalment in the Bourne franchise. This time again with Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. After many years we find Jason back hiding at the outskirts of the EU in Greece making money in street fights. He is approached by Nicky Parsons who has discovered secrets about his past while hacking the CIA. As a result of the hack the CIA hunts down Parsons and Bourne and after 3 movies we know how that will go. The movie serves high paced action with the hunted Bourne taking the fight back to the CIA as before.…

  • Limburgs Mooiste

Last Saturday I went to ride Limburgs Mooiste with my 12 year old son. As we only did 2 practice rides, one of 70k and another one of 80k in the weeks before we took the shortest 70k blue route. With all the hills around Valkenburg it would probably be challenging enough. About the distance we were confident as we managed the 80k in our neighbourhood without issues, including some climbs around Rotselaar and Aarschot. The previous time I participated more than 15 years ago I got into a traffic jam near the parking lot in the morning so this…

  • SWAT

Went and watched the 2003 SWAT movie with Colin Farrell and Samuel Jackson, Michelle Rodriguez and Jeremy Renner again after seeing SWAT: Under Siege. Unfortunately the star cast doesn’t make it significantly better than the mediocre Under Siege. But it is also not worse. The movie doesn’t start of bad but as the finale unfolds it gets more and more incredible. First Farrell sees a trip wire in a tunnel filled with smoke and then he beats the arch enemy in a fight after he got his hand pierced by a Rambo knife. The movie doesn’t end there, with pierced…

  • SWAT: Under Siege

Watched this movie on Netflix some time ago. I watched the original SWAT movie with Colin Farell and Samuel Jackson. Compared to that movie this one is a bit of a low budget let down. It features Michael Jay White but he is acting like he only got paid half a salary. There are a couple of nice scenes but this is really B movie material. Nothing wrong with it, you can still enjoy it for one and a half hour but I doubt it will make a lasting impression. I don’t regret having watched it and because it only…

  • 3,5k Jog

Sunday I was planning to go for another bike ride again but it didn’t materialise. Around 3:30 I decided that I had to do something pro active to compensate for the upcoming dinner which would include a lot of food and sitting at the table with some exercise so I went for a run. As my last run dated from end of January I decided to take it slow and not go too far. I ended up doing a short 3,5k loop at a relaxed 6,5min per. k pace. Heart rate stayed under control the whole time, I didn’t have…

  • Maison Belge

Sunday we went for dinner at Maison Belge to celebrate a couple of May birthdays. We’ve been there a few times before and so far it was always a success. The kids opted out this time in favour of a home made pizza + Netflix movie evening. It saved us the worry that the dinner would take too long for them. Weather is finally improving so we could sit outside. There was no wind so not even remotely chilly for me. We were with 6 so we had to limit our choices to 4 dishes to keep the time to…

  • De Brasserie

Recently I was home alone with my son on a Saturday evening with the other family members out for dinner so we decided to go for dinner ourselves in De Brasserie in Keerbergen. The name may suggest this is to be a place on the lower end of the culinary ladder but it is actually more of a regular restaurant than a Brasserie. The food is of higher quality than that of a typical Brasserie and prices are in line with this. It is open daily starting at 11 which justifies the name. You can come early or in between…

  • Jan Primus route

As part of our preparation for Limburgs Mooiste on June 3 we cycled the Jan Primus route in the neighbourhood of Rotselaar. It is a 72km route with a lot short climbs around Rotselaar so it was a good practice. With the approach to the route and back we cycled almost 80km this time. This went fine but we were better prepared than the week before and had taken some energy bars along. We also managed to find back a few saddle bags for the bikes in which we put the bars, a chain lock and a tyre repair kit…

  • A Mathematician’s Apology, G. H. Hardy (ISBN 978-938831814-3, Hawk Press)

Read this short and apparently well known book from early twentieth century. I came across a reference to it in another book recently although I don’t recall where. Anyway, the book kind of tries to justify being a pure mathematician. With the focus on pure mathematics utility is discarded as a possible justification by Hardy from the beginning but he still discusses utility in a few chapters. Hardy tries to answer if mathematics is worth doing and why he does it. The answer as to why is simply because he is good at it and mathematics is the only thing…
