During our vacation we went for a bicycle ride on the island Ugljan starting in Zadar. We took the ferry in Zadar to the island and then cycled around on the island. The city of Zadar has some bike paths but they are not in very good shape, often very narrow with a lot of holes and bumps and used in 2 directions. Also, they are not well indicated so it is not always clear if you are on a bikepath or a footwalk. In the marina we were biking according to instructions on bike paths crowded with pedestrians. Same on the island on the road along the coast which was supposed to be a bike path but naturally was used by all swimmers and sunbathers as well. As a result our average speed was very low. But we compensated by taking some shortcuts where necessary as our tour also tooks us along not very bike friendly roads. At lunch time we stopped at the Konoba Ugljan in the town of Ulgjan. It was a nice restaurant with an open fire grill and we had grilled octopus for the first time in Croatia. Food was really great but the price we paid was also the highest so far on our vacation. We sat outside, under a roof in the shade, which was very welcome as the sun was burning. Some cold water and beers were welcome refreshments to accompany the excellent food. If you are not on a tight budget I can definetly recommend it. After lunch we continued cycling and stopped at some point to watch planes flying over the sea to pick up new water to fight a fire on the mainland. The fire was very far away and we could not see it but we could definitely smell the smoke in the air and we were cycling in the general direction of the fire. As the remainder of the road was not very interesting we decided to turn back to make sure we would be in time to catch the next ferry .
