Last year a remake of the Crow as released with mixed reviews. I haven’t seen that movie yet but I wanted to watch the original one from 1994 again starring Brandon Lee. At the time the movie was mostly known to the wide public because Brandon Lee died on the set while making the movie. This was strangely irony as Lee plays a character that literally returns from the dead to avenge the murder of himself and his fiancee one year ago. Like his father Bruce Lee; Brandon Lee died very young and before the release of his break through movie. The Crow was quite a hit at the time and having watched it on Netflix last week I have to say it is still quite good. The gothic atmosphere and crazy criminal characters are similar to the ones in the batman movies of the period. The cinematography is quite timeless and doesn’t rely on outdated special effects. The violence is mostly not too graphic, especially compared to today’s standards and the detached performance of Brandon Lee matches well with his character that is in fact already dead. I believe the movie is worth the view, it is well filmed and the lead role is played well, plus there is the associated real life drama with the death of Brandon Lee. the main weakness for me is that it lacks emotion, the movie didn’t really succeed in drawing me into the story and connecting with the characters.
