  • Nickel and Dimed. On (not) getting by in America, Barbara Ehrenreich (ISBN 9780805063899, Henry Holt & Company)

I finally read this book last week after it had been sitting on a shelf for a decade. Ehrenreich is a journalist who got asked by a publisher to write a piece about the living conditions of low wage workers in America. She decided to find out by getting such a job herself and mimic having to live from such a salary for a few months. She worked in 3 different locations doing jobs as a waitress, cleaning personel and finally working for Wal Mart. When Ehrenreich originally did her investigative journalism in 2000 the economy was strong and she…

  • Traveling Long Distances with Electric Cars: My Experience

Last year we had our first experience with going on vacation with our electric car, an Audi Q4 Eton. We didn’t travel too far, maximum 550km and drove relatively slowly on the highways in France. The experience with finding charging stations along the way and on our destination was quite positive and this year we took a ‘normal’ trip in the sense that we didn’t limit our destination because we were driving an electric car. We went to Croatia and split the 15OOkm trip into parts as usual so as not to spend a whole day in the car. Again,…

  • Discover Belgium Peak Beer: A Hidden Gem for the Lazy Casual Hikers

When we recently went for a couple of walks around Herresbach we stopped at Belgium Peak Beer on our way back home for lunch. The original plan was to go for lunch around Longfaye as that is were our walk started and ended but it was on a public holiday and the places we planned to go to was closed. Google search came to the rescue and we picked Belgium Peak Beer as the alternative. Our walk was approximately 14km long trailing the border of the nature reserve. As it was not too long and we thought we would be…

  • Dining at Altes Backhaus in Bleialf

During our recent stay in Herresbach we went for dinner in Bleialf in a restaurant called Altes Backhaus. The host of the B&B where we were staying recommended this as good quality with typical regional food for a good price. I can confirm it was a good tip. The place was packed and we didn’t have a reservation but after a 5 minute wait a table was made available. A lot of local people seem to come here which is always a good sign. The furniture is traditional and you can get typical German fare with a lot of meat…

  • Authentic B&B Experience in Herresbach: De Eifelhoeve

Last weekend we had to drop off our son for a scouting camp in Wirtzfeld so we decided to go for a few walks in the area and stay a night. We picked B&B De Eifelhoeve in Herresbach based on the location, the price and the ratings. A B&B typically adds a bit of authenticity compared to the standard hotel chains and this was certainly the case here. They describe themselves as charming and simple. And although the rooms are not luxurious they are not Spartan either. We had a room with an electrically adjustable bed, a rather fancy shower…
