Writing Fractions In HTML
I have been thinking about digitising my notes of mathematics and physics exercises done over the years and one option would be to add them to my blog. As I don’t have a business subscription I cannot use a math editor. One option available to me is to use LATEX but for some of the easiest cases this is not even necessary. If the only thing you want to do is write numeric fractions then this can be accomplished with a little bit of html code. I read a book about html 20 years ago and not all that long…

Star Trek 5. The Final Frontier
After the 3 movie story arc spanning over Star Trek 2, 3 and 4 we have an independent story again in Star Trek 5. This movie is Spock versus anti-Spock aka Sybok in search of God. Sybok is a Vulcan half brother of Spock and a heretic that adheres to ways from before the Vulcans became rational. Sybok believes in ancient Vulcan ways based on the power of emotion. He believes he has found the location of the legendary planet Sha Ka Ree where God resides. The story has the classical themes of Star Trek : emotion versus ratio, good…

Star Trek 4. The Voyage Home
This is the last movie of the story that began in Star Trek 2. After having found the reborn Spock on planet Genesis and giving him his Katra back on Vulcan we start off where Star Trek 3 ended and Kirk and crew including Spock go back to Earth to face trial. But in the meantime a mysterious probe has reached Earth that is ionising the atmosphere and disabling all electronic equipment. En route to Earth Spock realises that the probe is speaking whale language but because the whales are extinct in the 23rd century the probe isn’t getting an…

Surely You’re Joking Mr Feynman. Adventures of a Curious Character, Richard P. Feynman (ISBN 978-0393355628, W. W. Norton)
I read this book in a Dutch translation a long time ago. And last week, looking for some light reading in the ‘scientific’ section I picked this up from the shelf. I had bought the English edition a few months back as I had given the Dutch translation to my daughter. I figured it was possibly an easy introduction to physics. Having read it again I am not sure as it is mostly about the scientific mindset. All the stories are about things that happened to Feynman in his life but underneath there runs this steady constant current about how…

Star Trek 3. The Search for Spock.
The third Star Trek movie is a true sequel to the second one so you really should have seen the second one to understand the story. The first Star Trek movie on the other hand is an independent story which you can watch on its own. With the dramatic ending of the second movie and the loss of one of the main characters in this movie the story is picked up again with the crew returning home still trying to recover emotionally from the events in The Wrath of Kahn. This is of course impossible and Kirk and his crew…

Blue Thunder
Blue Thunder came out in 1983. It stars Roy Scheider as police helicopter pilot Frank Murphy and Warren Oates as his superior. It must have been the last movie of Warren Oates as he died in 1982 after suffering a heart attack. Malcolm McDowell plays the bad guy. Of course the real star of the movie is Blue Thunder, a hight tech fully armoured and armed helicopter the government wants to use during the upcoming olympics as a countermeasure against riots or terrorists. Of course the government has secret plans for the helicopter which Frank stumbles upon by accident. The…
