• FIH Pro League Games Belgium – Spain 21 May 2022

2 earlier attempts in 2020 and 2021 to go and watch the Belgian Red Pathers and Red Lions hockey teams play failed due to covid. Last weekend we finally managed to actually go and watch a couple of games. As a bonus Merijn got elected to be in the line up so it was an extra special event for him. Both teams played against Spain so we expected nice hockey from both sides. The Panthers played first. In the last 2 years their level has improved a lot. They missed the last olympic games but if qualification matches would be…

  • Tilburg D1 plays in Hoofdklasse next season

From the beginning of the season in the promotie klasse the ambition of Tilburg has been to achieve promotion to the Dutch hockey ‘premier league’ known as hoofdklasse. They were well on track as they were at the top of the league with 2 games to play. We went to watch the game of Tilburg D1 against Leonidas from Rotterdam as Hannelore is a big fan of Maddie Hinch. Tilburg lost that game unfortunately, Tilburg ended up second and Rotterdam achieved direct promotion to hoofdklasse. The consequence was that Tilburg had to play play offs against Oranje Rood in a…

  • Hockey Match Leonidas D1 – Tilburg D1

Last Sunday we went to watch this game of Tilburg D1 away at Rotterdam. Since it was announced that Maddie Hinch was returning to the Netherlands to play in the promotieklasse with Tilburg we had the plan to go and watch her play. Unfortunately Tilburg D1 always play their games on Sunday at approximately the same time as we are playing so it never worked out so far. Now that our own competition ended on May first there finally a chance to go and watch the legendary Maddie live. It was a one and half hour drive to Rotterdam but…

  • Enter the Dragon

Enter the Dragon was Bruce Lee’s 4th movie and his first and last Hollywood picture. It was to be his big break through in the West but unfortunately he died before it premiered. Compared to his earlier movies this one has more of real story and also co stars John Saxon and Jim Kelly playing an important role in the movie. It is a mix of the spy movie and martial arts genres in a Hollywood production. So in that respect it is a more classical movie with a plot driving the action instead of the other way around like…

  • Long Way Down

In 2007, 3 years after the Long Way Round, Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman Long Way Down went on a second motorcycle trip together. This time they went all the way from John ‘O Groats to Cape Town in South Africa and they called the trip Long Way Down. They had the BMW R1200GS at their disposal this time which people say is less heavy and nimbler compared to the R1150GS they rode on Long Way Round. The other team members like Claudio, Jimmy and Russ and David also joined again. Compared to Long Way Round this trip is even…

  • Way of the Dragon

Way of the Dragon is the third Bruce Lee movie and the one that prepared the road towards Enter the Dragon. It was released in 1972 and it was the debut of Chuck Norris on the screen. Compared to the previous 2 movies this one is a step towards traditional US action movies in terms of story telling and acting. It plays in Rome and with Chuck Norris, Bob Wall and a few others has a more global cast compared to the all Asian ones from the first 2 movies. This probably makes it a bit easier to enjoy for…

  • Long Way Round

I first watched this series on DVD years ago when I was still riding a BMW GS1200 motorcycle myself. I had read a few books about riders traveling the world but watching Ewan McGregor & Charlie Boorman actually make the trip through Mongolia and the Road of Bones in Russia made the experience a lot more ‘factual’. Recently I saw it again on Apple TV+ and I am no longer riding a motor cycle. I never had the time to go on trips to ride my motor cycle and mainly used to avoid the traffic jams of my daily commute.…

  • The Universal Test of Citizenship

The Americans have had their civics test for many decades. Certain politicians around here (in Europe) have been proposing a similar test for new immigrants as a way to share our common values and culture and to integrate the newcomers in our society. The proposal has been problematic from the start for various reasons I do not wish to go into here. In essence the problem is that the rules don’t seem to apply equally to all. So why not go for a universally applicable test : A test for citizenship of our Solar system What is the most abundant…
