PerfectDraft Pro
After some years of hesitating I finally bought my own PerfectDraft machine and a Pro one at that. Ever since my wife stopped drinking wine because the sulfites give her headaches I am mostly drinking beer. But there is never room in the fridge and one beer is too little while 2 are often too much. So I often throw away half of the second one. The continous stocking of new bottles and then bringing back the empty one is also a drag. For these reasons and more I was considering to buy a PerfectDraft. But they are not exactly…

Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith
Episode 3 is the last part of the prequel. Here the premonitions that Anakin will fall under the spell of the emperor to be and turn to the dark side finally come true and Darth Vader is born. Driven by ambition and the fear for losing Padme after already having lost his mother Anakin is drawn into the nets of Palpatine who promises him knowledge to save Padme. Besides this psychological thriller story line there is the action packed story of the Jedi fighting the separatist rebellion and are almost all murdered when they are betrayed by their clone army…

Arnold
Watched this 3 part documentary on Netflix. Each episode is roughly 1 hour long and covers a different period in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s life. Part 1 covers his youth and body building career. Part 2 is about his career as an actor and part 3 covers his venture into politics as governor of California. The series is nicely done, basically a long interview with Arnold and other people (e.g. James Cameron) together with a lot of historical footage. Quite incredible what he achieved in all 3 domains. Granted, he never was a great actor but his ambition was to become a…

Responsive Design
My youngest started first grade this year and needs some tool to help him study so I decided to create a quiz app in a browser for him. So it was time for me to brush up on html, css and JS. I have some basic code in Javascript for randomly picking the questions and keeping track of the score and the rudimentary page layout done. Next comes the requirement to be able to use the quiz on different platforms like tablet and laptop. This is where the idea of responsive design comes in which is new to me. I…

Heart of Stone
Watched this on Netflix during the Xmas break. I categorise it under light entertainment. A spy movie that borrows from James Bond and Mission Impossible but without an attractive story. All the typical ingredients are there (except for the obligatory Bond sexcapades) and Gal Gadot is an appropriately attractive lead actor but she lacks the obsessiveness of Ethan Hunt and certainly the ruthlessness of James Bond as portraid by Daniel Craig. This maniacal aspect of the lead spy is an essential part to trigger a sufficient amount of suspension of disbelief needed to be absorbed in such over the top…

Interceptor
Watched this movie on Netflix during the Xmas break. It stars Elsa Pataki in the lead role of a disillusioned army captain who is promoted away to an isolated missile interceptor base after a #MeToo incident. She soon finds herself in charge of defending the base against a terrorist attack. The movie got a lot of negative criticism on the internet, partly because Pataki didn’t have the star quality to be lead actor. I have to admit I didn’t realise who she was until I looked her up but it didn’t bother me while watching the movie. I kind of…

Hidden Strike
Watched this movie from 2023 with Jackie Chan and John Cena recently on Netflix. I found it a run of the mill action movie. Not bad but also not great. It lacked a bit of dramatic tension but the typical Jackie Chan slap stick humor works well in combination with John Cena. This was the first movie with John Cena I saw and it was a positive surprise. He has screen presence and was somehow quite funny in a natural way. Besides an actor Cena is also a record holding professional wrestler, regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers…

Interview with Richard Rhodes about The Making of the Atomic Bomb
I was surfing the web for some information about the Oppenheimer movie and came across this interview with author Richard Rhodes on YouTube in May 2023. Really interesting to hear Rhodes talk about the many people he talked to in the course of writing this book and others. Well addition to reading the actual book.

Killers of the Flower Moon
Last week we had an unexpected opportunity to go to the cinema and watch Killers of the Flower Moon as both kids were not at home. Even though the movie was only released mid October we had to look for a theatre that was still playing it. We were in luck that it was still playing in Cinema Lumiere in Mechelen and we didn’t have to go to Brussel or Antwerp. Cinema Lumiere is more of an old style city cinema and not a modern megaplex type of cinema. Housed in the center of the city in a nice building…

Even though Netscape was the first really widespread browser it really started with Mosaic. Marc Andreessen was involved in both products. There is s a short Computing Conversations interview about the origins of Mosaic.
