Tumbas : Frits Zernike
Famous Dutch physicist and Nobel laureate Frits Zernike lies buried in graveyard Zorgvlied in Amstelveen near Amsterdam. He is buried together with his sister Elisabeth who was a writer and a poet. In the nineties the tombstone was removed and a new one was ‘inaugurated’ recently. If you understand Dutch you can watch a short documentary on the site of Groningen University. Another Dutch Nobel laureate, Gerard ‘t Hooft was present and assisted in the unveiling of the new tombstone. If you like visiting graveyards then Zorgvlied is probably a good one, well laid out and maintained and with many…

Magnum Force
Magnum Force is the first sequel to Dirty Harry. In this second movie Harry has to investigate vigilante killings of criminals. It starts with the assassination of crime lords but after a while also small time criminals are shot. It turns out that the executions are performed by police officers. They believe Harry will be on their side but are of course mistaken. Even though Harry is trigger happy he sees himself as working in the system and obviously he only shoots the ‘right’ people. How to know who are the right people is a problem that the movie, like…

Dirty Harry
Dirty Harry probably doesn’t need an introduction. This movie came out in 1971 and is a classic. Clint Eastwood stars as San Fransisco police inspector Harry Callahan. When the movie came out it caused a lot of commotion because of the violence used by Callahan. in the movie Harry is chasing a psychopath killer nick names Scorpio and both use excessive violence. The only difference is that Scorpio kills innocent people and Harry only kills criminals in firefights defending himself. Criminals that surrender are arrested, not shot.So Harry is a cop that uses excessive violence only when provoked and then…

GA KingsX London
On Friday evening we went for dinner in GA KingsX near Kings’s Cross station to celebrate the end of the exams, passing all of them. We picked this place because we were picking up the rest of the family arriving with the Eurostar later that evening. We picked this bar/club also because it looked classy enough to celebrate and it stayed open late so we could stay a bit longer after dinner waiting for the 11PM train to arrive. It is a bit of a strange place with subdued lighting, a dj and a mix of old and modern interior…

London Science Museum
Whenever I visit a city I have a look if there are any interesting science museums. In London we planned to go to the Natural History museum but during on trip in the underground we saw an advertisement for the Science Museum and the temporary exhibition of ZimingZhong, mainly British clockworks given to the Chinese Emperor as gifts by traders in the 18th century. Many things in London are quite expensive but most museums are free of charge and you can make a donation to sponsor them, minimum donation is 1 pound. We ended up donating 5 pounds each which…

Cichetti Knightsbridge
After visiting the Science Museum in London we needed a place for lunch. In the direct neighbourhood of the the museum all places were completely packed. So much so that people were eating outside even though it was not exactly warm. We opted to take a little walk in the direction of Knightsbridge and try our luck there. We ended up Cichetti, a nice Italian restaurant. It was located in an old building with an old style interior which was nice change compared to all these clean modern places. The menu consisted of various small dishes to chose from and…

PerfectDraft Stella Unfiltered Lager
After the first keg of standard Stella I connected the unfiltered version. I expected much of the unfiltered Stella but compared to standard Stella I found little added taste. Not that it was bad, on the contrary but the standard Stella already had quite a lot of taste and the unfiltered one didn’t add much to that in my opinion. So looking at value for money I will pick the standard Stella and maybe order an unfiltered one for an occasion with guests coming over as it is less common. Bottom line for me is that it adds a bit…

Wagamama St Paul’s
On our first day in London we were looking for a place for a late lunch and ended up in Wagamama St Paul’s. We had heard about the chain but had never been to one. This is Japanese fast food with quality as can be expected from a fastfood restaurant. Although not bad the food lacked finesse and was heavy on dressing to add flavour. It wasn’t exactly cheap either so I would personally pass on a new visit unless I could find anything else more interesting in the neighbourhood. The place had a quite positive rating of 4.2 in…

London Marriott Maida Vale
We spent a long weekend in London and staid at the London Marriott Maida Vale. We found this hotel looking for reasonably prices options in London. It is a bit outside the center and less expensive. Also, we could get a family room with 2 double beds which also reduced the price compared to places that force you to book 2 standard rooms. The neighbourhood is not exactly nice but we were a few minutes away from a underground station and we needed to switch only once to another line to get into the city center; taking in total a…
