• The Tesseract: Origin, Meaning, and Its Marvel Connection

I first heard of the term Tesseract in the movie Captain America: The First Avenger. The Tesseract is also called the cube in the movie and it contains the space stone, one of the six infinity stones. In the movie The Avengers it is used to create a wormhole to allow the Chitauri to invade New York. For more about the tesseract in the Marvel Universe, see their fandom article. Only recently did I read that Tesseract is a term coined by Charles Howard Hinton in the nineteenth century for a four-dimensional hypercube. At the time there was a lot…

  • Deja Vu in Eindhoven Redefines All-You-Can-Eat Dining

Went for dinner in Deja vu in Eindhoven with a friend. The concept is interesting. Like in some other places you have a menu with lots of small dishes from which to choose and instead of ordering everything at once you start with some dishes and when you finished them you decide on additional food to order. As the portions are small you can try lots of different dishes and the time between ordering and getting the food brought to the table is not too long so you don’t have to worry about sitting and waiting for food the whole…

  • Book Review : De ontdekkers van de hemel, David Baneke (ISBN 9789035136885, Prometheus)

Bought this book after reading about it in the magazine of the Nederlandse Natuurkunde Vereniging. It is written by a Dutch historian specialised in the history of science. The title of the book refers to the famous book of Harry Mulish, de ontdekking van de hemel. It describes astronomy in The Netherlands in the nineteenth and twentieth century and tries to discover why Dutch astronomy was so successful. This is not really a book for the general public because the subject is probably not of general interest. A large part of the world will not care about the success of…

  • Enjoy Craft Beers like the Baron at Batteliek: Mechelen’s Hidden Gem

In Mechelen there is a microbrewery located in an old church called Batteliek. You can go there for food or for drinks only. Obviously you can order their own beers with your food. If there is something you like you can also buy beer cans to enjoy at home. The Albert Heijn in Mechelen also sells some of their beers so you don’t even have to go all the way to Batteliek to buy one of their beers. Recently I tested their Baron. This is an unfiltered lager and it is quite nice. It combines a low alcohol percentage of…

  • Rebel Ridge

Watched this movie on Netflix. Came across it by accident as I had never heard of it before. The movie is from 2024 and stars Aaron Pierre in the lead role as ex Marine Terry Richmond on his way to post bail for his cousin in a small town. The corrupt police force seize his money and following stand off between Richmond and the police chief (played by Don Johnson) spirals out of control very fast. The movie is a bit untypical for an action movie because there is not a lot of explicit violence nor a large body count.…

  • The Crow: A Timeless Classic Worth Revisiting

Last year a remake of the Crow as released with mixed reviews. I haven’t seen that movie yet but I wanted to watch the original one from 1994 again starring Brandon Lee. At the time the movie was mostly known to the wide public because Brandon Lee died on the set while making the movie. This was strangely irony as Lee plays a character that literally returns from the dead to avenge the murder of himself and his fiancee one year ago. Like his father Bruce Lee; Brandon Lee died very young and before the release of his break through…

  • Identical Twins

Identical twins come from a fertilised egg that splits in two while it is still a small collection of cells. Both halves then develop into two babies that are genetically the same. Because they come from one fertilised egg they are also called monozygotic twins. Identical twins always share the same sex and share many physical characteristics but contrary to what is sometimes said or believed they don’t have the same fingerprints.

  • Dining at La Stanza: A Must-Visit Italian Trattoria in Leuven

A few weeks ago we went for dinner at La Stanza in Leuven for a last pasta dinner the evening before the half marathon EC on Saturday. La Stanza is a traditional Italian trattoria that make their own pasta. It is well known and typically very busy so if you want to eat there it is best to reserve a table. If you like authentic food then I can recommend the place, the pasta is cooked al dente and will not disintegrate in your mouth because having been overcooked like in many brasseries. The freshly made sauces are varied and…
