Wat als ?

In Flanders the bicycle racing season has started again and on Saturday 21st of March we had the first classic race of the year, Milan-San Remo. Wout van Aert participated and was considered an outsider after favorites Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel. All three were involved in a crash some 30 kilometers from the finish close to one of the hills where the finale was expected to start. Pogacar was able to quickly continue the race and would finally win. van der Poel could also continue but had a nasty cut and could not follow the unleashed Pogacar on the last climb. van Aert lost a lot of time because he had to wait for new bike before he could continue and had to chase the pack. With the help of some team mates he managed to get back to the front from where he promptly escaped to end third, 4 seconds behind the winner. In an interview after the race the journalist asked if he could have done better without the crash : wat als in Dutch. He had a nice answer : a(l)s, a(l)s, a(l)s. as is verbrand hout.
