Went to watch the Bob Dylon biopic a few weeks ago in the middle of the week. The theatre was almost empty and I have to say that those who were absent were wrong. The movie stars Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Edward Norton as Pete Seeger. The movie covers only a short period of Bob Dylan’s life at the beginning of his career. When he arrives in New York at the beginning of the movie he is 19 years old and still a complete unknown. Near the end of the movie he is a star and he sings Like a Rolling Stone, which ends with the line ‘like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone’. According to real Dylan fans there are certain inaccuracies in the movie and overall Dylan is portrayed as a too friendly character. As I am not a Dylan expert myself this didn’t bother me and I really enjoyed the movie. The music is really good and listening to the songs sung by Chalamet and Barbaro it is striking how good some of the lyrics are. They were also addressing social issues of the time and from that standpoint it is maybe understandable that some people considered his oeuvre to be worthy of a Nobel prize in literature. If you are not looking historical for accuracy in every detail or are oblivious like myself and you like Bob Dylan’s music then I can only recommend going to watch the movie. It made me buy the soundtrack and one of his albums recommended by fans. Still need to listen to those at home but am looking forward to it.
