After hesitating for a few years I finally bought a new record player. I ended up chosing the Rega Planar 2. There was a nice open box deal at Eglantier hifi. I had been playing with the idea to buy a record player for some time just to be able to listen to some old records we still have. I got rid of most of my old records long ago after switching to CDs but had a few left and then got more from an inheritance about 5 years ago. I originally thought to get a budget player but then changed my mind and thought to get at least a player from a specialised company. Reading reviews I ended up with a choice between Pro-Ject and Rega. I figured to get a Rega Planar 1 but then saw this deal for the Planar 2 and went for it. I got the player just before christmas only to realise that the ‘new’ AVR I have didn’t have a phono amp anymore. So I ended up shelling out more money for the Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 pre amplifier and a couple of quality Atlas Equator cables. The idea of a budget investment vanished into thin air. But, after figuring out the correct pre amp settings and also setting the audio in settings on the AVR I got everything working after christmas and we listened to a few records already. The sound is absolutely amazing, never heard this quality in my youth. Of course then I did have a budget system in which all components were cheap, not only the record player but also the amplifyer and the speakers. I now decided to get my nice DVD player with separate audio circuitry fixed as it needs some realignment. I’ll get myself some quality cables as well.
