Jan de Volksschilder

Last week our daughter was away with school so we took the opportunity to go to Jan de Volksschilder in Keerbergen. The restaurant is known for its variety and quality of spare ribs. As our daughter is vegetarian this is not the first choice to go for dinner with the whole family. But as she was away and because our son loves spare ribs with thought this was a good occasion to go for dinner here. It was in the middle of the week so there was room even though we had made a last minute reservation to be sure to get a table. In the weekends and on Friday evening it tends to be very busy. We obviously had spare ribs which were nice. Staff was very friendly and they had some not so standard beer choices on the menu. The restaurant is in an old house of 1912 and as a result the interior has a certain charm. Apparently a painter lived in the house in the seventies and started serving some food for people coming to look at and buy his works. This is how it started and explains the name. If you don’t like spare ribs you can also eat something else. My wife had fish in a pan prepared in the oven which she liked. But the main attraction for me remains the choice of spare ribs in which it is different from other restaurants.
