My shaving habits have changed a couple of times. I started with some disposable Gilette type, then switched to the types where you could change the blades, went to an electric shaver from Philips or Braun, back to Gilette and then finally back to a modern Philips shaver. The reason why I changed often was because I have a sensitive skin, plus I am sometimes a bit clumsy. So dry electric shaving irritated my skin and was the reason why I switched from electric shaving back to Gilette. But with the razors I would sometimes cut myself if I didn’t pay attention. Also, the razors had to be rinsed a lot to keep on doing its job which I found annoying. And they didn’t last long. The really old style ones with replaceable blades that can be sharpened I always left to professionals, I would probably shave my ear off. Then, 10 years ago I had the opportunity to buy a high end Philips electrical shaver around Christmas at a highly reduced price. The advertisement promised these shavers could also be used wet so I gave it a try and I am happy with it, no chance I will go back to the blades. The shaver unit lasts long and the shaver heads/blades can be replaced every couple of years. They last a lot longer than the Gilette razor blades for sure. I was using Nivea shaving foam and was very happy with it except that it didn’t feel right to buy multiple pressurised aluminum cans for shaving each year. So, a couple of years back while on holiday in Italy I bought a shaving brush and soap as an alternative. A small stick of soap lasts a very long time and the brush is also still the same one bought years ago in Italy. I like the Nivea shaving foam better but not enough to justify buying all these pressurised containers each year that end up in the waste when empty. Next step would be to try and make my own shaving soap. But I will probably have a go at hand soap first, used by everyone in the household and a lot more often every day as well. Plus hands are a little less delicate in case the soap doesn’t come out exactly right the first time.
