Star Trek 10. Nemesis

movie poster Star Trek 10. NemesisThe last movie with the TNG crew and the end of a 10 movie series that began with ‘Star Trek. The Motion Picture’ in 1979 and ends with ‘Star Trek. Nemesis’ in 2002. The first 5 movies suffered from varying quality and seemed to struggle to translate the themes central to TOS episodes into stories worthy of a full length movie picture stories but from ‘Star Trek. The Undiscovered Country’ onwards this was no longer an issue. From that moment the movies expanded thematically and stylistically bringing something different every time. The transition from TOS to TNG crew was nicely done and also brought an injection of acting quality. When The Original Series came out the thematics and how it was filmed were a strong point because the stories didn’t rely on special effects. That is also the reason why it can still be watched today although even scenery was sometimes so primitive and obviously fake that it is almost funny now. In Nemesis Jean Luc Picard meets his Nemesis namely himself. A dilemma allows the movie to expand the mandatory tactical space battle with philosophical issues about what it means to be ‘you’. The nurture versus nature debate packaged as a Star Trek movie. Luckily it is not done in a way to hinder the action but it is actually used as a premises around which to construct the whole story dynamic. One of the best movies out of the 10, a fitting end to a 20 year voyage boldly going where no one has gone before.
