As the title suggests this is the first Star Trek movie with the TNG crew starring. It is actually a transition from TOS to TNG in the sense that a couple of the old crew still appear at the beginning of the movie when Kirk, Scottie and Chekov join the maiden voyage of Enterprise B as guests. The promotion tour including press on board turns into a rescue mission for a couple of El Aurian space ships trapped in a energy ribbon. The Enterprise also gets caught in the energy ribbon during the rescue and Kirk is pulled into space when the hull is breached while working in a control room to break the Enterprise free. The Enterprise manages to break free and save around 50 El Aurian passengers from the other space ships. The story then jumps 80 years ahead to meet Jean Luc Picard and crew of Enterprise D. From there on the movie feels very much like a long TNG episode. The connection between this movie and the series feels much stronger than that of the previous movies and the TOS episodes. That is probably because series and the movies are closer in time for TNG compared to TOS. The last TNG season ended in 1994, the same year as the movie came out. In contrast the last season of TOS played in 1969 where as Star Trek 6 came out 22 years later in 1991. The gap in special effects and visual style over these 22 years is enormous in that case. Starting with Star Trek 5 the movies have been getting better with Star Trek 7 being the best of these last 3 movies. the story is the best with some nice science fiction ideas expanding the possibilities in the story line making it all more diverse and richer compared to the movies with the original series crew that were more constrained with respect to ideas and themes. The movie has a nice tension build up and while viewing the plot slowly uncovers and the first part and second part start to connect until they finally merge again in the grand finale. I would say a must see for Star Trek fans. The characters in TNG are also more multi dimensional compared to TOS bringing a wider emotional palette. Even the android is struggling with emotions. And in this movie we have Malcolm McDowell playing the villain as an extra. For others not familiar at all with the Star Trek Universe and especially the Original Series it is probably difficult to follow some of the dialogue and references. But then again these people will probably have little inclination to watch these movies anyway.
