Back to the Future

A few weeks ago we went for an afternoon walk in the sun and talked with friends about how they had watched Back the Future with the family some time back. As we are always contemplating which movies are good to watch as a family ourselves we took the tip and dug up the dvd box with the 3 movies and watched the first one 2 weekends ago. The kids had never seen it but for Joke and myself it was a nostalgic trip. After 35 years the movie is still ok, it doesn’t rely on special effects too much and only the closing sequence really looks somewhat antiquated from the fx point of view. It is a bit of weird hybrid between teenage high school comedy and sci fi time travel but Michael J. Fox shines and makes the movie still worth while. The movie came out in 1985 not long after The Terminator in 1984 and both rank high in the list of top time travel movies. Thinking back the Terminator movie seems to fit much better in the cold war-apocalyptic Zeitgeist with movies like The Day After from 1983 than Back to the Future which is almost whimsical. When I originally watched it I was still at school myself and that made it probably more emotionally powerful and personal. Seeing it back again I found it a well done comedy in which the time travel serves as a means to create a light hearted yet gripping adventure. Movie entertainment still worth watching.
